    Hello Gardening Friends!
I have an really strange stone that I noticed in my garden, and I was wondering if anyone could help me identify this. It is a small rounded stone that appears to be squeezed out from the ground and it's about 2 inches long and 3 inches wide, I'd say. It's surrounded by red clay. It just looks so weird, unlike anything I've seen before. I live in Bloomfield, Connecticut and I'm new to this area. Is this at all familiar to anyone?

Hi BlackThumbofDoom, is it possible to see a photo of said stone? That would go a long way towards identification :smt023

Huh, I'm in Danbury CT and this totally sounds like something I just saw today, a sizable stone in my garden. Never noticed it before going to put down compost to get going this season. Couple inches out of the ground with reddish dirt around, rest in, maybe 6" altogether. I'm not too worried, but wonder why this is?

This is bizarre! My neighbor and I in Litchfield, CT were just talking about these stones that are showing up on our property. At first we thought it was the other neighbor kids throwing stones and whatnot, but upon closer inspection the stone is very odd as it almost appears like a stalagmite pushing up through the earth! There is also rusty residue that has collected around the area that has discolored the grass in the yard...almost like a powdered red clay. My wife called it "Mars dust." lol. Anyone know what these are?

Rusty residue may mean that they are either meteorites or a corroded type iron ore. I live in Georgia and we have tons of red clay, which means that they might be clay conglomerates which are clay, sand, and small stones/pebbles all packed into one. I would suggest smack one with a hammer and see what its made of. This will lead to a better ID of what it might be. Also pictures would help more.
