Fall Progress

Category: October 2010 | Posted: Wed Oct 20, 2010 2:38 pm

Summer has come and gone. I am sad to see it go mostly because I freeze in the winter and I can't get outside. At the same time I am happy because it gives me a clean slate to try new things next spring. This year my garden started off so well! Plants were a healthy dark green and growing. I got my first picking and then no rain. Plants started looking sad, beans started to drop their flowers, and tomatoes got tough skins. Being on a well I was afraid to water to much as peoples wells were going dry. A little wasn't enough and the garden dried up. So my Fall clean up started a month early. Pulled up all the plants in the garden and piled them in a pile behind the tractor shed which is at the end of the garden. Husband hooked up the tiller and Son 'tilled' the garden. ;-) Then a storm came. Where was this rain when I really needed it! It is truly amazing how much "help" you get when tractors are involved! So I give it time to dry out, wait for my helpers (I wouldn't trade them for the world) to go back to work and school and tilled my garden. Planted crimson clover for a cover crop. We have gotten a good bit of rain so far this Fall. The clover is up and looking good!

Yesterday I planted 2 Crape Myrtles and mulched them good with straw. Used the rest of the straw on a few other trees. Raked up pine needles and put around the Sage and Basil. Collected seeds from the Basil and Boxwood Basil. Perfect timing on the trees as it is raining a good steady rain today!
