When did this thumb turn green?

Swampy icky day... but fence!

Category: Secret Garden | Posted: Sun Jul 08, 2018 11:54 pm

It really needs to dry out here. There are patches of slimy dirt randomly around my walkway in the garden. It is smelly and buggy. 😟

On another note, the squash is growing beautifully. Flowers! So now zucchini, squash, and peas have all flowered. My friendly ants should be helping to pollinate.

We got the small wrought iron fence today! I was able to take down the makeshift plywood that keeps doggo out. Grapes should be happy to have more to climb across. Still need the gate part, but I’m making the next purchase a composter.

A Rainy Start to July

Category: Secret Garden | Posted: Thu Jul 05, 2018 10:44 pm

It has been raining almost nonstop for a week now. We had to move up our planned purchase of stepping stones because the ground is just super smooshy. The plants seem okay with the rain so far. The only damage seems to be a bit of flattening happening to the herbs and brassicas.

I now have a new battle on my hands. My young herbs keep getting mowed down. I thought found the culprit on July 3rd: a tomato hornworm caterpillar. I can’t bring myself to kill them, and my neighbor doesn’t have a garden... 😄

But no. Last night, I found two cutworms munching on my Lemon Balm. They went to visit next door too. I guess I now have some rounds to make every night! That’s okay, though. Since it keeps raining, I have to keep reapplying my neem oil in the evening. 😅

I never thought I had a green thumb before, but I must be a late bloomer. For some reason, last month I thought I’d try my hand at growing from seeds for the seventy-th time. Normally I can’t even keep houseplants alive.

We pushed out the fence last week and now have this delicious small side yard that can’t be seen except from our own bedroom window. This is really fortunate since I already started seeds that have exploded into plants in the Backyard Oasis. The hubby is super handy, so he helped me build the first bed of the four I am planning. We don’t have enough funds yet, but there will be three tiers for this bed, eventually.

My babies (that’s what my kids are calling them) are thriving in the raised beds. I also started a bullet journal to keep track of the plants. With a sun screen and lots of love, they see, to be braving the Florida summer heat.

I woke up this morning dreaming about gardening.

Send help. Or mulch.
