The Eclectic Garden

Making a little bit of everything look just right.

A Welcome Addition To The Garden

Category: Gardening | Posted: Thu Mar 17, 2016 6:22 pm

I was digging holes in my garden for the new blueberry bushes this past weekend and was delighted to find this guy. I've been trying really hard to get my soil right and it's always a good sign when the earthworms move in.

Toadstool Philosopher

Category: Gardening | Posted: Tue Mar 15, 2016 11:03 am

I was using the roto tiller to break up the garden when a small toad jumped out in front of me. He took three or four leaps and then stopped about three feet away from the oncoming tines. As the tines drew closer, instead of jumping out of the way, the toad started moving his back legs and I watched with interest as he slowly buried himself. In a matter of seconds the only thing that I could see was his eyes and nose. If I stayed on course I was going to run right over him. So, I stopped the tines, reached into the dirt and moved him to a safe location.

I couldn't help but analyze the situation. In some ways we are like that toad. Oftentimes, danger will be headed right toward us, but instead of moving out of the way we simply ignore it and hope it goes around us. Like that toad in the dirt, unless someone else gives us a hand, we get plowed right over.

Sunflower Journal, Saturday 3/12/16, week 4

Category: Gardening | Posted: Sat Mar 12, 2016 1:40 pm

Okay, I'm going to start using a tape measure. One month into it and some of them are 3" high at this point. I'm interested to see how much growth we see next week.

Sunflower Journal, Saturday 3/5/16, week 3

Category: Gardening | Posted: Sat Mar 05, 2016 12:11 pm

Okay, I have to admit that the pictures were taken this past Thursday because I knew I would be at my daughter's house this weekend. The thought of driving 4 1/2 hours one way just to snap a picture of a sunflower didn't seem too appealing.

Sunflower Journal, Saturday 2/27/16, week 2

Category: Gardening | Posted: Sat Feb 27, 2016 8:24 pm

I noticed the sunflowers starting to break through the ground this past Monday. Here's a picture of one that I took today.

Sunflower Journal, Saturday 2/20/16, week 1

Category: Gardening | Posted: Sun Feb 21, 2016 12:22 am

I fell in love with sunflowers a couple of years ago and now they are a staple in my garden. I am going to attempt to document my sunflowers in weekly pictures this year. I planted Mammoth Russian. I like the smaller ones too, but I especially like these because the heads are so big. I like the big stalks too. I let them dry out and then put them back on my garden so the organic matter can be worked into the soil.

I tried roasting the seeds for myself, but the best use that I've gotten is chicken treats. I'll cut one of those big seed heads off and just put it on the ground. The chickens love it and normally have it picked clean in no time.

The weather has been wonderful here, so I put the seeds in the ground last Saturday, 2/13. As of today they haven't broken through the ground yet so the picture doesn't show much.

Double Post

Category: Gardening | Posted: Sat Jan 16, 2016 1:21 pm

I posted this under the MEMBER'S GALLERY, then realized that I should have blogged it because it kind of goes with the blog I posted last year about getting a bunch of amaryllis for 2 cents each.

At any rate, you can find more details and pics under the GALLERY post, but I got these pots for $1 each. If you couldn't tell, I'm pretty excited about it.

Phenomenol Lavender not so Phenomenol

Category: Gardening | Posted: Tue Jan 12, 2016 2:32 pm

So, I purchased a new lavender called Phenomenol this past year that was supposed to be able to handle more humid environments like Florida. It did okay with the humidity, but couldn't handle the summer heat. Needless to say, it succumbed to Florida's renowned sunshine.

However, I am happy to report that I also purchased a lavender called Boysenberry Ruffles at the same time and it as been... well phenomenol in the garden. Now I have to see if it will get cold enough to encourage some blooms.

A secret dream of mine would be to have a lavender farm in Central Florida, but finding a plant that will fluorish is the main problem. I may never have the money or opportunity to really have a lavender farm, but it doesn't hurt to dream.

Mums

Category: Gardening | Posted: Fri May 22, 2015 9:32 pm

These two mums were kind of haphazardly planted in the garden last year. I really didn't expect them to do this well.

Gardening Before Work

Category: Gardening | Posted: Thu May 21, 2015 10:29 am

I love this time of year because it starts getting light around 6:30 am. I have to be at work at 8:00. I've always said that work gets in the way of everything and that's especially true of gardening. By the time I get home I'm tired and the hot, Florida sun is beating down in all of its glory.

So, I do my best to get up early enough to allow myself 30 minutes in the garden before work. Like a lot of people my age high blood pressure is a concern and my job doesn't exactly help matters. I've found that my 30 minutes in the garden is a great stress reducer and it really helps me get my head on straight.
