The Eclectic Garden

Making a little bit of everything look just right.

Sunflower Challenge, Sunday, 7/17/16, Anyone Interested?

Category: Gardening | Posted: Sun Jul 17, 2016 2:16 pm

Thought I would post some pictures of my efforts to save the seeds from the 10 footer. As you can see, I ended up with a full pint far of seeds.

I was wondering what I was going to do with all the seeds and then I had an idea. What if I shared them and next year a few of us tried to grow them? Would anyone out there be up for the challenge? It would be fun to see how they grow elsewhere.

Sunflower Journal, Sunday 7/10/16, week 21, FINAL ENTRY

Category: Gardening | Posted: Sun Jul 10, 2016 11:38 am

So, this is it. Last week should have been the final entry, but I was out of town visiting my daughter.

As you can see, the sunflowers have died off. The 10 footer never did relent. It's still refusing to lower its stubborn head. I'll have to save some seeds from that one.

Frank and Henry, thanks for following along for the past 21 weeks. I've enjoyed posting every week. Maybe I'll do another plant journal one day.

Sadly, the show is all but over, but the ten footer is still standing tall.

The end is drawing near for the sunflowers. I'm still amazed by the ten footer. Even now it continues to stand proud, refusing to bow it's withered head in defeat like the others are doing.

Sunflower Journal, Saturday 6/11/16, week 17

It was inevitable, but the sunflowers are winding down. Honestly, I didn't expect to still see blooms after seventeen weeks. The highlight is definitely the lone, ten footer that is proudly standing far above the others. I don't know how it survived. We had at least two more wind storms since I posted pictures of the wind damage. In fact, I had a few more sunflowers that were destroyed by the wind. Somehow though, that one has managed to make it through unscathed.

I plan to keep on with the journal until they are all gone. It will be sad, but that is how it goes when you grow annuals. I guess it's kind of a metaphor for life. Beginnings and endings.

The wind storm that passed through on Wednesday night left some damage, but I've been able to salvage most of the sunflowers.

Here are the sunflowers that were too far gone to save. Don't worry though, the chickens will enjoy the seeds.

I'm most excited about this guy. One lone sunflower has shot way above the others, reaching over ten feet high.

Had a storm blow through last night and it did some damage to the sunflowers.

The first sunflower opened up on April 28th and now, exactly one month later, the sunflower show continues on. I honestly didn't remember having them around to enjoy for so long. How long will it last? I'll keep on taking pictures until they are gone.

I didn't take any height measurements this time around. I probably should have, but if they grew any taller it was only a couple of inches. Still getting quite a few blooms and I enjoy walking out every morning to look at them.

On a side note, I spoke at a men's meeting this past week. There were about sixteen men there and I was using an illustration from the garden. To preface my illustration I asked the question, "How many of you have a garden?" I was totally surprised when only one man raised his hand. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. After all, it does take a lot of time and effort, but to me the benefits totally outweigh the efforts.

Okay, I'll get back on track and post the pictures now.

I thought they were done growing, but one is past 90 inches tall now. As you can see from the pics, some of the blooms are spent. I've already fed one to the chickens. There are still a lot of blooms that haven't opened though.
