Heuchera villosa 'Caramel'

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Fri May 04, 2012 3:04 pm

'Caramel' coral bells must be the newest craze this year. I've seen it everywhere for sale. I finally fell for the hype and picked one up, it is a nice color.

I have a bog garden!

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Fri May 04, 2012 1:57 am

Well...I've had the bog for some time, with one plant in it. It's left over from my ponds. I turned one pond into a "bog garden" and filled in the other. A few years passed with my one plant. Finally I played in the mud today and have it planted full. Can't wait to see how it looks in a month or so. I'll post photos then (it looks a little sad right now).

Park Inn & City National Bank (Mason City, IA)

Category: Architecture & FLW | Posted: Thu May 03, 2012 3:42 am

We were fortunate enough to visit the Park Inn September 10 & 11, 2011 during it's grand opening. Originally, the bank was the vault-like east end, with the law offices between the bank and the hotel. The exterior remains true to Wright's Wasmuth Portfolio rendering, and the interior has been very well converted into a modern day hotel. We were very impressed with the interior conversion, and the the attention given to keeping as much of the original plan intact as possible. This was an impressive task, and well done, especially when accommodating modern day ADA laws and fire codes.

This is the north side of the entire complex. The hotel is on the right, originally law and bank offices were in the middle section, and the bank is on the far left.

This is the bank main doors.

This is the hotel meeting room off the main lobby.

This is the skylight stained glass windows in the hotel.

This is the lobby where you check in. The low ceiling upon entering in typical of a Frank Lloyd Wright design. It encourages you to continue on into the larger room.

More windows...

FLW design barrel chairs.

2nd story windows looking out into the city park. Another effort to bring the outdoors "in".

May 1 - Dusk Photos (Iris & Lily)

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:13 am

The iris just keep coming! I even picked up three more new varieties yesterday, can't wait to see them bloom. Waiting on 'Before the Storm', 'Avalon Sunset' and 'Iris Megabucks' to bloom.

This is 'Lady Friend' again, I really love this one.

Reiman Gardens Butterfly Garden

Category: Botanical Gardens | Posted: Mon Apr 30, 2012 1:19 pm

We visited Reiman Gardens in Ames, Iowa April 29th. Their climate is just enough colder than our's that not much was in bloom yet. But the butterfly garden was entertaining as always.

Birthday Wishes from the Trip to the Nursery!

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Fri Apr 27, 2012 5:27 pm

I found many things I'd like to buy, but they were out of my price range for today. However I took a few pics to make a birthday "wish list".

I'd really like this 'Takara' Japanese Tree Peony! But boy, they are expensive. $90

This is called Black Lace Elderberry. It reminds me of a Japanese Maple, but for much less cost. It would be perfect for a berm I have.

And if the tree peony is too expensive, this one's pretty nice too, although certainly not inexpensive either. It's called 'Buckeye Belle'.

'Lady Friend' Tall Bearded Iris

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Fri Apr 27, 2012 12:24 pm

It's another new one in bloom! Also purchased on eBay, this is 'Lady Friend'. The success I've had with these eBay purchases is encouraging me to buy more this fall.

Today I don't have to work much, so I'm heading off to some nurseries I've never visited. Doubt I'll buy much if anything, but it's still fun to look.
