Construction Update June 23

Category: Home Improvements | Posted: Sun Jun 24, 2012 1:27 pm

We didn't waste any time getting the construction on the garage started. We tore off the siding and sheathing on the north side & did get that side finished. On to the west side Sunday, then it will be ready for the vinyl siding.

Work in progress...

Phase 1 Done!

Category: Home Improvements | Posted: Fri Jun 22, 2012 9:39 pm

Garage footings, new sill plate & rotted wood GONE! Ready for us to take the siding & sheathing off & resheath & wrap for the vinyl siding (we'll DIY that). We raised the footings of the garage several inches to match the level of the driveway. Someday when we pour a new concrete floor & driveway, we'll appreciate that.

Retaining Wall is also finished. This came out so much nicer than I expected.

Construction Update June 21

Category: Home Improvements | Posted: Fri Jun 22, 2012 1:56 pm

The wall is a surprise! It's all wall now, no dirt to have to plant. This I actually like, as trees were always wanting to grow in this area, and it was a hassle to weed.

The concrete footings for the garage did get poured yesterday. They did a really nice job. They propped up and leveled out our garage the best one could. It's a lot better than it was.

Construction Update June 20

Category: Home Improvements | Posted: Thu Jun 21, 2012 2:48 pm

Looks like they're getting close to pouring the garage footings. Maybe today!

And the retaining wall is beginning to take shape.

And my neighbor and I were able to use the excavated dirt to build up our gardens. My neighbor's is especially low, and a large portion was unusable due to flooding when it rains. They just pulled the truck up and dumped it in the low spot. Should be good stuff too, original Loess Hills soil, not fill dirt.

Building Porch Posts

Category: Home Improvements | Posted: Sun Jun 17, 2012 11:54 pm

We got a good start on building sleeves around our old iron porch posts. We started by making a PVC base plate to keep the wood off the concrete (PVC board).

Lots of gorilla glue and use of the brad nailer later, we were putting the final side on our cover.

We got started on the corner post, but ran out of time to work. But you can get a little bit of an idea how it will go together.

Still have to finish the corner cover, then we'll prime & paint. We decided to cover what we had instead of putting up 6X6 posts to save room on our porch. It gave us a little more walking room to get by the posts since the porch isn't very deep.

My Church Musicians

I lost one of my musical angels in a hail storm, but I found a new home for my two survivors.

Just a Cute Pet Pic

We purchased this church seating from an auction years ago when they demolished one the churches in town. Peanut now owns it.

My Wildflowers Online Search

Category: Online Resources | Posted: Wed Jun 13, 2012 10:26 pm

I discovered a new-to-me site today searching for the name of my yellow poppy-like flowers that are apparently invasive (but mine are located where I don't mind that trait). Turns out they are Celandine (yellow poppy).

If you have a wildflower, you can search through photo i.d. categories by color at http://www.MyWildflowers.com. Very handy little website!

Cleaning Up

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Mon Jun 11, 2012 8:08 pm

I think every muscle hurts from digging trees, pulling trees, pulling weeds, digging out unwanted plants and vines. But, the area where the new retaining wall is going is now cleared so they can get to it. The wild trees everywhere are gone (except the ones I undoubtedly missed), and the honeysuckle vine blocking my back stairs is also gone! Yay! I hacked and whacked until that thing was out of there, now all I have to do is figure out how to get the rebar that was supporting it out of the ground (aka honey do list).

The honeysuckle used to block the entrance to these stairs.

Another "before" pic of the retaining wall disaster.

My cleaned up shade garden, it still looks busy, hard to get a good pic in the dappled shade.

Vegetable garden looks pretty good, we got 2.5" of rain last night that we sorely needed. I'm experimenting having the peas grow on the hog panel arch with wire.

Corn is being nibbled on by a critter, not sure how much I'll actually get this year.

Only 2 squash plants came up, guess I'll have to be happy with that. Tomatoes in the background.

Tomatoes and peppers always do well.

Beans are looking good this year, now that it's fenced.

I'm Finally Done!

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Sat Jun 09, 2012 12:16 pm

Done pitting cherries that is. I've never had a year like this, a month full of picking and pitting cherries, bumper crop! I have two trees, one that blooms two weeks later than the other so they don't all ripen at the same time.

This year I got 36 pounds of pitted cherries, enough for 18 pies! I gave away another 12 pounds, and left a tree full of cherries because I just don't see the need to buy a taller ladder to pick them. My Norpro Deluxe stoner is still working fine, much to my amazement for such an inexpensive gadget. Going to buy another one for backup next year though, I've been using this one for 5 years now.
