This plant has a tendency to die out after a year or two if grown in anything but free-draining soil.

This is a very hardy plant. We have a number of areas throughout our beds and they all came from a few plants we discovered when we cleared out an overgrown weed bed that was there when we moved in. It was the only surviving non-weed in the bed. It takes to transplanting very well, spreads out easily and will continue to bloom as long as you keep deadheading.
I like this opinion
I like this plant too, and have found it to be hardy. My garden does have good drainage, so maybe that is why. I like how it forms a solid block of ferny foliage that never needs staking. The foliage is a good contrast to larger leaved plants. I haven't been able to keep up with deadheading, so I don't know about its ability to keep blooming.
