Annoying mums! They won't come out of my garden and the asters provide lots better fall color anyway. They are taking up my space and quickly becoming a weed. It is a beginners' plant for those who want to keep it there, and an expert's plant for those who want to get rid of it.

Here in zone 5, Mum's are considered a hardy annual. They are neither evergreen nor invasive and are sold in the fall. If I am lucky enough to have them overwinter in my garden I keep them trimmed back until fall. Trimming them over the summer encourages them to bush out and produce more blooms. Keeping them shorter also keep the stems stronger and prevents them from flopping over.

These have to be moved every 3rd year to keep them healthy. It won't be long before I'll be looking for a home for my red ones. I cut them back to 4 inches after blooming to keep them nicely shaped and compact for the next year.
