In its younger stages the small heart shaped leaves make a nice house plant, and cohabitates well with ficus benjamina as a ground cover for the potted tree. As a house plant the leaves have stayed small and heart-shaped for 15 years it has been in the same pot as a ficus benjamina. When grown outside the size of the leaves mature and change in shape and size as the vine becomes more vigorous.

If attached to your clothing, the awn will dry out and curl and push the sharp tip of the seed through your clothes and into your skin. That's why you don't want to raise sheep where this grass grows. It will drive itself into their skin and get infected.

Grows very quickly. More vigorous growth than some clematis.

The young stems of this tree look like candles before the leaves have emerged. When young it looks like a tuft of grass and because its habitat is fire maintained it grows rapidly to keep the foliage away from the fire. This tree is also a source of turpentine and is a very important tree to the rare and endangered Red Cockaded Woodpecker because it uses these trees to nest in.

Depending on conditions can be upright or trailing. On the Pacific Northwest coast is popular garden/basket plant but can escape and be invasive as it out competes native understory species. (I have tossed some aside in the grass only to come back to it finding it had rooted)

Mine escaped from a planter and has spread. Easily maintained and kept within bounds.

Sold for planting in water gardens and fish ponds in my area

Good ground cover for shady areas. Tender small leaves are injuried easily by walking on but because of rapid growth recovers quickly. I have it growing on the north side of a patio area and under trees to show off ferns. In harder frosts it turns to black mush but comes back quickly in spring.

Have a friend who uses it under benches in her greenhouse. I use it to the top of pots for my houseplants (bulbs and ficus)

Mine really like water. The moister I keep the soil the more it blooms
