Nice dark green fern. Foliage is somewhat glossy, so it is a subtle but nonetheless attractive addition to the shade or woodland garden. Deals relatively well with dry shade (one of the most difficult gardening conditions). Deer will avoid it as well, so it can be planted around other plants that they desire (such as hosta!) and it will deter them from the more delectable plants.

The seed heads of this grass are very attractive. I have grown it in pots for a nice contrast with flowering plants. Can also be cut for a vase or dried for arrangements. Will self sow if seed heads are allowed to dry on the plant. The nickname 'Bunny Tails' is very apt.

4-6 foot shrub, has arching sprays of very white flowers in late spring to early summer. The flowers are dead white, no yellow or pink in them. Great plant for a casual setting, woodland garden or cottage garden. Old fashioned plant. Carefree.

Lovely variegated red twig dogwood. The variegated foliage is very attractive during the growing season, the red bark of the twigs is very attractive when dormant. In New England these dogwoods are susceptible to the dogwood anthracnose. I have included a picture of the affected leaves, above. In my garden it mars the appearance of the shrub somewhat, but is not unsightly. Still worth growing for its variegated foliage.

For leaf cuttings, a much higher success rate has been achieved by myself when leaving at least 1/4 inch of stem on both sides of the leaf. Any attempts I have made to get a leaf cut from the stem have not taken root and died in short order.

Great eaten raw as a salad and is highly nutritious

I second what Jewell has said, above. I grow this grass for its foliage contrast, the variegated leaf is attractive. It does grow with abandon, however, and must be curtailed every year. Hacking it back is one of my yearly chores but it does not seem to resent it.

Easily grown. I grow it in my garden as a food source for monarch caterpillars.

This makes a great hanging basket plant for the tropics.

It is a tropical species that does not take colder
weather well. In cooler climates, it must be kept
indoors or a greenhouse over winter.
