I've had great luck growing this in sandy soil where nothing else would grow.

Coming into contact with the sap of giant hogweed, followed by exposure to sunlight, can produce painful, burning blisters, also known as photo-dermatitis. Hogweed stems contain a large amount of juice that squirts out when stems are broken or cut.
Contact with the eyes can cause temporary and possibly permanent blindness.
One plant can produce up to 100,000 seeds in one growing season.

All parts will cause severe discomfort if ingested.

It has the common name Fireweed because it is the first plant to start growing after a forest fire has burned away all the vegetation.

Flowers will emerge before the leaves in erly spring. Young bulbs will produce only leaves. Keep warm and drier over winter.

Give it a little epsom salts (Mg) once every few weeks. It's an epiphyte from Brazil and other atlantic rain forest so does well with high humidity but good air flow. Mine flower all year long.

A great rainforest plant. Glossy leaves and startling huge red flower formations held above foliage.

I like this plant because it has large leaves and beautiful varied colours and happily maintains them when it is too hot for the beautiful colours of the northern hemisphere deciduous flora. Many Australian plants that are drought resistant have small leaves with a small surface area, or else are best suited to the more humid tropics, so this bush belies it's more tropical appearance by growing in our harsh and dry summers.

Really fun to grow. Be patient, it will get bigger. Well worth the wait!

I would not recommend this plant to beginners. For one thing, the seedlings are so tiny. They are extremely challenging to handle when thinning out. Also grows extremely slow. Needs that hot hot heat. I will try a different coleus next year. The colors have not thrilled me. I have heard that you can get better color out of coleus if you grow them in the shade. I tried moving my planter in the shade and I noticed a slight difference.
