Another must have for containers here in zone 5. It takes the heat well, and can be trimmed back when blooms fade. I have often over-wintered lantana in my garage. Then I have an instant container in the spring!

I like using licorice plant in containers for its pretty, silvery contrast. If it gets too leggy, I trim it up to keep it tidy.

This is a David Austin rose and my favorite rose. It has a lovely scent; flowers that open beautifully from nice formed buds; are fantastic cut or dried flowers; or use for homemade bath salts to get that fragrance in the winter.

Velvety red color with nice sized blooms usually three to a bunch. Great old fashioned rose scent. Resistant to black spot. Depending on root stock can be a bush style rose or climbing rose. Mine is approximately 25 years old and is a fairly consistent bloomer throughout the summer.

Suseptible to black spot, rust, powdery mildew and aphids. Has semi-double cup shaped scarlet flowers. Has been a reliable bloomer for me on an archway over my gate. In our damp climate black spot deleafs it most years, but keeps on blooming.

I agree with Kay, this is a wonderful plant to add contrast in a container or hanging basket. It is a perennial down here in 8A however the heat seems to affect its ability to bloom. Blooming is rare and the blooms appear stunted. Blooms or no blooms, it is still one of my favorite plants.

Rosemary is not hardy here, but it is a must have for a container every year!! I love to cook with it, and grow it near the path so I can pluck a bit off to smell while I'm in the garden!

This is sold as an annual in zone 5, but will often over-winter. The silvery foliage is a nice contrast in annual beds and containers.
