A wonderful plant. Easy to grow, provides lots of color, drought tolerant, and butterflies love them.

This South American shrub grows to about 3.5 m tall. It benefits from pruning. Leaves are simple, alternate to 13 cm long. The common name refers to the way the flowers change colour with age; when they are first open the petals are a deep purple and then over the next couple of days they fade to pale lavender or almost white. The flowers are solitary or occasionally there are several together, corolla lobes spreading to 3-4 cm diameter. Fruit is a capsule. Interesting evergreen shrub with flowers whose colors change daily from purple to lavender to white. Flowers bloom profusely from winter to summer. Protect from full sun for best results. Prefers an acid-rich soil. Fertilize with feed for acid-loving plants. Water regularly to establish, then maintain moist soil. Prune in spring to tidy plants.

Grown more for its evergreen foliage than the small flowers.

Better give it some room! It spreads... almost invasive.
The blooms are very fragrant... almost like a gardenia. |
