At last! Progress!

Category: Planning for the Garden | Posted: Sat Mar 06, 2010 3:40 pm

Finally! The digging is finished, the onion, leek and pepper seedlings are sown indoors and growing nicely, and within a week we should have both paths done in the garden and be ready to start planting! The weather is nicer, and it finally feels like we're starting to make some progress.

Yay!

Noooooooooo!

Category: Planning for the Garden | Posted: Fri Feb 05, 2010 8:39 am

So, since my last blog entry I have done exactly...nothing. Not even planted my onion seeds :-( We've been so stressed and distracted with everything else we just haven't been able to. *cries a little*

Tomorrow, hopefully, we'll be able to finish off.

Digging

Category: Planning for the Garden | Posted: Sun Jan 31, 2010 6:42 pm

It's slow, it's labourious...it's...that's right! Digging. We have a nice little 15' square veggie plot, and frosty nights, and we're digging and raking like mad trying to get it all done and levelled before the baby comes home later in the week. So far we've done about 2/3rds in 3 days, so the day after tomorrow is our goal for finishing. Then we can start marking out and making the paths, then we can start sowing with confidence!

The challenge begins!

Well, I've got my hands on a book which has some wonderful advice about circulating what you grow, where to grow stuff, and generally how it all matches up, including a couple of plans for what you can grow, where and how (a "gourmet" one and a "Feed the family" one). I'm gonna see how I do following the feed the family plan, but of course, the first step is to work out what I already have (a HUGE box of seeds), what the plan requires, what I want to change, what I need to buy, and when I need to start.

Add to that the fact that I now have a nice new mountain of personal problems, and my never-ending list of business tasks to get on with isn't getting any closer to ending, and I'm in for a fun few days!

First baby steps

Category: Planning for the Garden | Posted: Fri Jan 08, 2010 3:58 pm

So, I'm starting to plan what I'll plant, how and where in my garden. I'm not a complete newb; this will be my second year. But still, it's my first year of doing it 'properly' and not just fumbling through it hoping to get it right.

Basically, I have three beds, each 5'x15' and a patch of lawn with a little strawberry bed against the house, a patch of patio with a little greenhouse, another patch which will hopefully get some potted herbs, a north facing wall I'm hoping to get a morello cherry tree and some tart jam-making currents for, and a space out front where I'm thinking of putting something climbing and edible, plus maybe a water barrel or two with maincrop potatoes (thanks to potato blight last year).

I guess we'll see how it goes!
