If it doesn't flower or produce fruit, it can become useless in the landscape except as a screen.

It has seed pods that look like oats, hence the common name Northern sea oats. They turn copper in winter. It will become a blue-green color in shade.

It takes little watering, has pretty foliage, and small but bright flowers. However, it is a headache to weed the pachysandra patch.

It is usually considered as favoring well-drained soil, but it grows just fine in my clay soil.

The Cabbage White butterflies love it. The flower buds of blue ones look great with red columbines.

It is excellent. It is a good cut flower, lasts a long time in bouquets, and is one of the few plants in my garden that holds its own against the daisies.

It is a good bouquet flower, but it is an aggressive grower and can become invasive in the garden.
