One of the earliest blooms of the year. Tolerates moderate foot traffic and mowing. Native in the US east of the Rocky mountains. (A plant can't invade its' own territory.) Will colonize in preferred conditions.

A great cold weather crop, getting sweeter as the temperatures get colder.

A short-lived perennial.
Following blooming, the mature plant produces "pups" and then dies out.

*** EXTREMELY TOXIC - All parts of the plant are toxic with many recorded cases of accidental and intentional deaths by poisoning.

This one seems a bit fussy and finicky, to me.
I picked up a "rescue" plant from a big-box store and expected a quicker recovery than I am seeing - the plant is surviving but not thriving.

Provides striking foliar color for containers or beds.

Depending on sun exposure the coloring may range from bronze to chocolate-y brown to plum-y burgundy with random splashes of magenta pink, and has a lustrous sheen.
The flowers are relatively inconsequential.

Treat as an annual outside of it's hardiness zone.

I use this plant as an accent in the ground landscape over summer and I don't dig them all up. I've never had one of these plants survive winter in Z8b, AL near FL border.

An attractive foliage plant having fuzzy leaves and stems with purple/burgundy undersides.

Provides striking foliar color for containers or beds.

The colorful foliage has a lustrous sheen and each leaf is marked with random splashes of magenta pink.
The flowers are relatively inconsequential.

For me, this tends to be one of the more finicky members of the "shrimp plant" family.
