I agreed with Kay, above. This plant is grown for its foliage, which is very interesting. Mine has green leaves with maroon and white zigzags through them. The maroon goes well with other maroon-leafed plants such as ligularia or heuchera. I suppose the white could be echoed by a white hosta or the white of a astilbe flower.

I am told it can be aggressive if grown in more sun. I grow it in shade and it is very well-behaved. It only gets to be 8-12" in height in my garden.

I would never recommend Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana) in a civilized garden bed...only in a wide open field where you do not care how many plants it runs over in it's successful effort to claim all the land around it.

Great plant, easy to care for. It also is said to be an air freshener.

In the U.S.---Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is listed as an exotic invasive species to Missouri and the Midwest by the Midwest Invasive Plant Network. It is one of the top twenty plants known to be spreading into native plant areas and crowding out native species. It spreads primarily by self-seeding, but will also spread by rhizomes. It is particularly invasive in wetland areas and is on the World Conservation Union’s list of 100 Worst Invasive Species. It is now listed as a noxious weed in Missouri making it illegal to grow, propagate or sell the plant (or which means it may not be sold and must be controlled on all properties).

This fern has epiphytic tendencies and can be encouraged to establish itself on palm tree trunks.

Mine in Zone 8a has made it through two winters just fine, even with snow and ice last year. Swallowtail Butterflies love it.
