These squirrels are not in my garden. They are out on my road. Twice in the past month one has darted right out in front of me and I hit it. I feel really bad about it. dr laughs at me now because when I see a squirrel on the side of the road I slow down to give it a chance to decide what it is that it wants to do. Today, coming home from town I turned onto our road. There was a squirrel sitting right smack in the middle of the road. I stopped and sat there waiting. Finally I yelled at it. I asked it what was it going to do because I wanted to go home. It turned around and went back to the side of the road. We turned the corner and was almost to our corner when one ran across the road in front of me. It's a good thing I slowed down because his "brother" went running across after him. I just started to go when a third one went running out in front of me. I stopped and yelled, "Okay, is that all of you." I guess it was because there were no more running across the road. I made it all the way home without hitting one. I know they are busy collecting winter rations but the rations won't do them any good if they don't learn to look both ways before they cross.

When we were children one of the early lessons on crossing the street was look both ways before crossing. I suspect that that the squirrels were never taught that vital piece of information by their parents. Skunks have the same problem. It's nice to hear that you slow down or stop for squirrels. Of course there may be a crow sitting in a tree thinking otherwise.

Opossums rarely see their third birthday. It isn't because they are naturally short-lived, but because before their third birthday, they come to a road they have to cross. They seem to be genetically programmed to cross a road at exactly the wrong moment.

Rolling Eyes Yuk! I don't like Opossums but they do have a right to live. Squirrels too.

Laughing You must be a distant relative of mine. I'm glad you stopped for the squirrels. I once stopped at a zebra crossing because a magpie stood by the curb. The magpie crossed the road and I drove on. It was only afterwards I started thinking about what I'd done and was very pleased that nobody saw me. Embarassed

I always stop for animals and am glad to say Ive never hit one...although I did see a cat get hit, right after Id avoided it >_< I was sooo shaken up over that one...
One time, I was driving down the road and a pair of squirrels were playing in the middle of the road. When I got up to em, one ran off, but the other was sitting there smirking at me...until I blew the horn! It flipped head over tail and darted across the street!
