A Hairy Woodpecker plus,

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Wed Apr 22, 2009 5:29 am

Many people get confused with the Hairy and Downy woodpeckers. If you don't see them together or up close, it is hard to know which is which. Today I'm posting the Hairy, and an extra shot so that you will see just how much different they are. The second shot, and no fixing in photo shop etc, shows the two on a log, I have them all trained to do this. Look at the log and compare the size of the birds.

The red spot on the back of the head seems to be a good differentiator, would that be correct Kildale?

Your Hairy and Downy woodpeckers differ in size like our Lesser spotted and Great spotted. Although the names do suggest that one is larger than the other I was still surprised the first time I saw a Lesser Spotted as I didn't realise just how small they were.

yeah i was thinking about that red spot too...

is that unique to the hairy or is it a male/female thing in both birds?

Great shots. We're lucky enough to have both of these species here. The Hairys are excavating a nest hole in a locust tree. Very exciting.
