Poles or Cage?

Category: Tomatoes | Posted: Fri May 04, 2012 3:30 pm

First a little update ..... I guess there will only be 3 surviving at the end .... I hope.

50:50 ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

Right now I can see only 3 plants are healthy while 2 are unhealthy with their leaves having yellow spots and curving upwards and one dead.

Unhealthy ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

Hmmm!!!! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

RIP ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

For the 3 healthy ones, I have decided to go with bamboo cage which I think they will do better in this kind of extreme weather.

Should the unhealthy plants recover, maybe I'll go with poles.

Ouch!!! It's Not Smooth Sailing!!!

Category: Tomatoes | Posted: Thu Apr 19, 2012 4:02 pm

After just 3 days of planting my baby toms, I was just about to relax when one of them was curled up dying.

First Casualty ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

I just couldn't believe because it was fine in the morning and now!?!!?? The only thing I can think off is a careless bird landed on it causing it to break at the soil level. It was sad, very sad!!!

Investigation ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

Luckily I still have a pot of baby toms which I kept as insurance should the need arises.

Assurance!! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

The healthiest of the lot was chosen and was planted in the excat same spot.

I wonder .... what's next!!!!

The Growing Begins!!

Category: Tomatoes | Posted: Mon Apr 16, 2012 4:26 am

Ze Bed!! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

Finally the bed was done the day before yesterday

Mulched ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

and the fiery sun reappeared while it was mulched. Those whitish spots are where the toms are going to go in and they were put there so that the soil would be exposed when they are removed.

With the crazy weather, the mini farm is more of a mini jungle!!

The Chosen Ones ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

Yesterday was planting day and the specially selected seedlings was a sight for sore eyes .... they were severely attacked by leaf miners.

Reserves ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

Luckily I kept the extras after selecting the best 6 seedlings to be planted. They too were attacked by leaf miners but they are doing much better than those selected ones. I guess the attack rate per plant was much less because there were much more plants here. Anyway I got rid of the part of the leaves that was attacked.

Pot Removed ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

I had the whole pot submerged in water to loosen up the growing media before lifting the seedlings out of the pot. The media I used was 100% compost. I wanted all the seedlings out of the pot so that I can easily seperate them.

Plant them deep!! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

Plant them deep is very clear in my mind after having two very diappointing attempt to grow toms, but then again how deep!! With the seedlings in my palm I had to make a quick decision and I decided on up to the first leaves. Having already dug the hole I dropped the seedling in to check if the depth is OK ....... like as though I already knew the depth I wanted, it was just perfect. Guess it must be the thought of "Plant them deep" in my mind that made me dug a deeper hole than normal. Thanks for that one very important point to those who had commented on my 2 earlier attempts at toms.

All in a row. ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

Looking at the toms all in a row makes me very pleased with myself! It was a pleasing moment to see that that part is done and now it's time to decide how to grow them .....trellis, cage, poles.......

Yikes!! I'm Behind Time!!!

Growing Well! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

The young toms are growing well and I think they need to be transplanted to their growing beds very soon.

The Mess!! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

The old farmer .. me :P ... is finding it difficult to get the bed done because of wanting to remove as much stones as possible from the bed.

The scapegoat! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

Actually the stones is not the real problem, the nutgrass is.....

The grass that drives me nuts!! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

Having not used this bed for about 6 months, it was once again invaded by the very notorious nutgrass....arrgghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crazy weather!! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

With the crazy suddenly very hot and rainy weather, it does not help at all ..grrr!! What normally takes me about 3~4 days to do is now taking me err.... no idea how much longer it is going to be! More than a week had passed and only a third is completed ....hmmm....................

Doing It Again!!

Category: Tomatoes | Posted: Sat Mar 24, 2012 2:33 am

Just a few days ago, the wife cooked curry and tomatoe is one of the ingrident.

Yuckie eh!! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )
I quickly grab a container from my very messy all purpose table and saved the seeds.

Seed on Comopost ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )
Since the seeds are clumpy and eckie, I decided to just have it all planted in my favourite starting media - compost.

Done!! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )
And the waiting begin!!

Toms Seedling ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )
Yippee!!! they sprouted a couple of days ago.

Toms Seedlings ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )
Yesterday I picked out the best 6 and had them potted in my own kind of starter pots and still in compost hoping that their roots will develop better if they have their own space.

Having failed in the first 2 attempts with just single plant, I guess it is time to go with numbers. Morever there is a competition going on with bragging rights as a price! :D

It's Time To Decide!

Category: Tomatoes | Posted: Sat Mar 03, 2012 3:29 am

No Growth :( ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

Almost a month had passed and there is no sign of any growth from this fella and I had to make a decision.

Retarded! ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

I decided to yank it out to see what was happening below ground level. It was easy to pull it out and the roots looks retarded. Guess that is why there is no growth, just struggling to keep alive....... is there some problem with the bed to retard the root growth? ..... I wonder!!

With the rain comes trouble!!!

Category: Tomatoes | Posted: Mon Feb 06, 2012 2:55 am

It rained for a couple of days last week and it is hot again. The rain did not help my tomato but it brought trouble.

Septoria? ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

I noticed some of the leaves started to have dried brown spot all over and I googled it to find out what is going on. My deduction is that it is attack by septoria fungus. Errr .... is my conclusion correct?

After Treatment ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

I wanted to save the plant because it is my only plant so I opted to just remove the infected leaves. Hope that this hot sunny weather will help the poor plant recover real fast.

Still Small

Category: Project Red Chili Pepper | Posted: Thu Feb 02, 2012 2:35 pm

Stunted ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )
Looks like the weather her is not suitable for this species of pepper. The growth is rather stunted and the fruits are small ..... guess this is all wrong because I got the wrong species and the fruit is not even red.

OK I'll go get myself some real red pepper seeds and start all over again.

TOM - Unexpected

Category: Tomatoes | Posted: Thu Feb 02, 2012 2:59 am

I am not a tomato person and the thought of planting tom was never in my mind until I read Sojerd's posting "Harvesting, Processing And This, That And The Other". Those beautiful tomatoes and the tomato concentrate just made me want to rush out to plant tomatoes and have a plate of spaghetti bolognese.

My first attempt had a great start but a unfortunate ending. Recently I sowed some egg plant seeds in compost and the first seedling that sprouted was transplanted to the ground to grow. As the days go by, it began to look different from the other seedlings that sprouted later and I began to wonder if it is just a weed. Not wanting to be feel like a fool planting a weed I yanked it out and replace it with a egg plant seedling which I am sure that it is an egg plant.

I pulled out the plant in the evening and just left lying there. The next morning it rained and I had a uneasy feeling about the plant. Maybe it is not a weed I wonder ..... hmmmm. By noon it was hot and it suddenly strikes me that the plant is indeed a tomato seedling. I rushed out pick up the poor misidentified plant which by now was almost a limp. Quickly I had it planted in a pot of compost with lots of water and placed it in a shady place feeling very guilty at the same time. I guess the seed must had been from the kitchen waste that we put into the compost. I was surprised that by evening that day it had more or less recovered.

In the very hot and scorching sun, I prepared a bed for it to grow on. I left it in the pot to grow stronger and introduced it to the direct very hot sun slowly until I am sure that it is OK with it.

Survivor ( photo / image / picture from KK Ng's Garden )

Yesterday evening I transplanted it into the bed and it grew so much while in the pot. Keeping my finger crossed that this tom will bear lots of fruits!
