My world with Nature.

Photographs, and a few words about the birds that visit the garden and those that I manage to see.

Merlin

I saw this merlin while walking along the laggon. There are a lot of ducks down there as they spend the winters here.

The Steller's Jay.

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Fri Apr 17, 2009 4:34 am

This Jay is the Provincial bird of British Columbia. Noisy and a bit pushy too. Had one last year that used to knock on the window for peanuts.

Todays bird is the Junco.

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Thu Apr 16, 2009 4:07 am

There are a few different juncos around, but those in charge decided to group them all in as Dark-eyed Juncos. So we show today one of them, it was called the Oregon Junco.

Downy Woodpecker.

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Wed Apr 15, 2009 4:05 pm

The downies stay all year round here and this gives me plenty of opportunities to get a picture. Here is the male, with the red on its head, which the female lacks.

Bewicks Wren

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Tue Apr 14, 2009 4:11 am

Thank you all for the messages, I appreciate you looking at the birds. The Bewicks wren has nested in the back garden and is always around the sun deck. Doesn't stay put too long though.

Sharp shinned hawk

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Sun Apr 12, 2009 7:05 pm

Hawks come into the garden quite often loking for an easy catch. I caught this one as she perched on an arch in the back garden.

Pileated Woodpecker.

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Sat Apr 11, 2009 4:41 am

Thank you all for the messages, as mentioned earlier, as I can only make 2 posts a day its hard to reply to each one. Anyway, todays bird is the largest of the woodpeckers, the Pileated. Having a drink on the deck.

Fridays Bird, the House Finch

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Fri Apr 10, 2009 5:03 am

This is a very common bird and is also widespread, I have photographed this species in Az so I know it can stand the hotter climate. This shot was taken in the back garden.

Today, a Spotted Towhee

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Thu Apr 09, 2009 4:42 pm

Hi Jewell. The answer to the Varied Thrush is yes, we saw it as it made its call as you mentioned. The Spotted Towhee is rather shy but tends to stay longer after a few visits. At first it would just take a seed and leave, it was rather hard to get a decent picture. Now however it hangs about a lot more.

A varied thrush.

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Wed Apr 08, 2009 4:10 pm

Thanks for the messages about the Rufous, I guess it will just have to be, Mrs Rufous. Anyway, todays bird is another winter visitor, the Varied Thrush.
