Photographs, and a few words about the birds that visit the garden and those that I manage to see.

Another Hummingbird.

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Sat Apr 25, 2009 4:51 am

We have a few Rufous hummers that are here for the summer, but this one, the Anna's, they stay the year round. This is the female. Are we tired of birds yet, I have loads of insects photos.

A pair of Bushtits.

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Fri Apr 24, 2009 4:04 pm

I have posted a bushtit image earlier but this time there are two. The reason I wanted to post this picture is to show the only difference that we see, the female has the yellow eye.

The red patch is just a male thing, you didn't think I would of missed mentioning it if it helped with the ID did you. Both species males have it. Here is the male downy showing his off.

A Hairy Woodpecker plus,

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Wed Apr 22, 2009 5:29 am

Many people get confused with the Hairy and Downy woodpeckers. If you don't see them together or up close, it is hard to know which is which. Today I'm posting the Hairy, and an extra shot so that you will see just how much different they are. The second shot, and no fixing in photo shop etc, shows the two on a log, I have them all trained to do this. Look at the log and compare the size of the birds.

A couple of Oystercatchers.

Category: My Garden Birds | Posted: Tue Apr 21, 2009 6:43 pm

Sorry that I can't answer your messages, we can only make 2 entries a day so its not possible. You all know I appreciate your comments, and with you all being so good, I've put in another picture for you. A couple of Black Oystercatchers. They nest close by on an island and then hang about the lagoon the rest of the year. When they meet each other they bow up and down and make quite a din.

A Great Blue heron caught fishing. A great bird to watch if you have the time to spare and the patience of a heron.
