Bad weather coming?

Category: Herb Garden | Posted: Thu Mar 09, 2006 11:42 pm

The weather forecast for the next three days is rain, rain mixed with snow and/or snow. Yavapai County, which is our county, is included. We live in the southern part of the county but we still are above 3,500 feet which is supposed to be the snow line. I guess I will bring my plants inside for the weekend. Brian said he will set up a table for me. I should do it before it gets dark. The rain, etc. isn't supposed to start before tomorrow but the temperature will start to go down. I want to go take a picture of my daffodils too. I was waiting for more of them to bloom before taking a picture. It is windy today but the sun is coming out part of the time and it was 48F when I last looked. I work at the library from 1 to 5 pm tomorrow so I hope any snow waits until after I get home. The worst day is supposed to be Saturday. Brian washed all of the clothes today. Laundry is his job around the house. Mine is dishes. I would trade with him but he hates doing dishes. The rest of the housework is mine too. He hauls in the wood and tends the fire. Sometimes he cooks. Usually he has supper started when I get home on Friday. I'll find something for the slow cooker tomorrow. He bought me a new set of pots and pans last week. He said he thought it was time I had a new set. It's been awhile I guess. I have a lot of pieces of different sets that I've had over the years. Now, I have to clean the cupboards to find room for them. The bits and pieces have to go, I guess.
After moving our son, seeing how much he had accumulated in a few years, we've been eyeing our stuff. We are thinking of making a list of things we can live without. Or maybe making a list of the things we can't live without. At our age, we can do without a lot of the things that we really needed at a much younger age. I, also, need to go through the box we keep for when the grandchildren come. They are older now and I'm sure some things are much too young for them. Maybe I need to find some things for older kids. They don't come all that often anyway. They would rather send us tickets and let us do the traveling. I don't mind but someone else doesn't like the hassle. He says we'll drive ourselves next time. Not in winter though. The only part about traveling in summer is getting someone to water everything. One summer Dan watered everything, but he didn't pick anything so it was messy when I got back. Oh, well! You can't have everything. I could choose not to have a garden, but I like having a garden. We give quite a lot away to neighbors. They don't seem to mind it. I'd better go bring things inside before it's time to start evening things, like supper, then dishes.

Herb choices

Category: Herb Garden | Posted: Sun Jan 01, 2006 9:10 pm

I couldn't decide if I should put this under choices or under herbs. I finally decided to use the herbs. I spent hours looking at the garden catalog. Since I have a gift certificate for a specific one I thought I would order herb seeds. That is why I want a greenhouse for my birthday. I finally made a list. It could change. I could order online, but I think I will mail order. In my mind I have a reason for it, but it may not make sense out of my mind. I guess that means I have to think about it some more. So, I will order some seeds and then go to the nursery closer to planting time and buy some plants. I have a huge rosemary bush that Brian says needs cut back so I may dry some. I am not sure why I should dry it when I can just go and cut the fresh but Brian says I should do it anyway. If I get a greenhouse, I may want to try to start a plant from cuttings. I have a book that shows step by step how to do it. I just have no place to do it right now. There is no room in this house for starting plants.
When I start plants now, I put the little pots on a table in a sunny spot. I cover it with clear plastic sheeting and at night I cover that with a tarp. It works, sort of. Not everything comes up and some things get too tall. So, I want a greenhouse that I can put a heater in at night and it will work better I think. Even the plastic kind. It's a heavy plastic called polypropylene.

Don't believe everything you read

Category: Herb Garden | Posted: Fri Dec 30, 2005 3:24 am

Don't believe everything you read. Yesterday, I said that I was going to work in the yard today if it was nice. Well, it was nice but I didn't make it to the yard. I went to the library and got another book. I hadn't intended to get a book. It was just there when we went so Brian could get another book. I still had three books to finish. Now, I still have three books to finish. I did finish the new Andrew Greeley book. I'm trying to finish the Frank McCourt book. I have a thriller and a mystery that I haven't started yet. I could finish a book in one day if life didn't get in the way. Maybe I will get into the yard tomorrow in the morning. I work at the library in the afternoon.
Dan came over this afternoon. He was going to help me make Recovery Disks for the computer. He also installed Adobe Photoshop? on the computer. He said it would be easier for me to use than the one that came with the camera. I downloaded the update for Firefox and somehow managed to get it right.
Dan's refrigerator quit last night. He called this morning when he got to work. The landlord had one stored in our big shed so I called him and said if he came after work, we could move it to his house. He came right away. His superior said it would be okay if he left if he was back by the time the library opened. so, we moved it this morning and he plugged it in so it would be cold when he came home for lunch. After he got off from work at five pm we went and helped him move the old one to his garage.
Then, he came over to work on the computer. He's a good son and I'm glad he comes over to see what I've been up too. I still have to finish the Recovery Disks. He did one to show me how and there are nine more to do. I think I can start it and read my book while it is working. I can change disks when it is time and maybe finish the book.
But, not today.

Birdbath

Category: Herb Garden | Posted: Mon Nov 07, 2005 9:42 pm

I stated in a previous entry that I had bought a birdbath and it held water. Now, it doesn't hold water. I broke it. I was trying to take the base off to fill it with sand and I twisted the top and it twisted into two pieces. Now it doesn't hold anything. Ah well!

Bird bath

Category: Herb Garden | Posted: Sun Oct 30, 2005 10:11 pm

I bought a bird bath to put in the herb garden. It's only white plastic, but it holds water. Now, the dog won't have to share. She doesn't chase the birds away but she comes inside to drink after they use her bowl. Pretty soon, I will have everything but herbs in the herb garden. I need to look and see if I can transplant some things this fall or if I have to wait for spring. I have thyme, oregano, sage and lavender that I could move. But, I could also wait for spring. The trumpet vine is getting ready to bloom again. It was blooming when I planted it. No picture, I'm afraid. But soon maybe.

Welcome to My Blog!

Category: Herb Garden | Posted: Fri Oct 28, 2005 9:13 pm

Hello! My name is Dooley. I live in Arizona. I do a lot of gardening. Not everything grows but I still enjoy doing it.

Yesterday and today, I planted 175 bulbs. I put 80 of them along the flagstone path in my new herb garden. I planted 50 daffidals, 75 grape hyacinths and 55 tulips total. The only herb in my herb garden is rosemary and I think it may have died. I'm waiting to see if any new leaves come on it. I have some pictures but right now I have no way to put them on the computer. Hopefully a new computer will arrive for Christmas and then I can post pictures. I have been taking pictures.
